Why Did You Make This Game?

We want to capture history. 2016 was considered one of the worst years (for everyone interested in playing this game anyways). We experienced some tragic events that showed a world that many of us didn’t recognize, a world we had previously assumed was steadily moving towards progress. A lot of not-quite-as-tragic-but-still-news events happened (like Kim Kardashian’s robbery) and by virtue of living in the age of social media, much of our history was defined by trending tags around popular stories. All of this matters to how we remember our years.

This game is devoted to encapsulating the noteworthy things that happened and yes, make light of shitty situations, but also never forget that we are built from our shared history and need to learn from the past. These cards spark conversations and remind us that dialogue makes history, and that we can learn from each other as well. When we played this game with a group of friends, we witnessed at least five conversations about current events triggered by questions like: "Oh, what happened with that?" or "I didn't know that went down!" Perhaps by funding this game, you’ll help people in the world #educatethemselves. Sometimes the only way to move forward and get people’s attention about the things that matter (and sometimes don’t matter) is to inject humor in it.

If this works, we can continue to capture moments in history onwards, so that they don’t die as trending tags but live on as active discourses feeding movements, as lessons and as portraits into the world we live in. Maybe one day, you’ll have five years worth of history in a shit-talking deck of cards that you can pull out whenever you need a refresher on all the things we can work on changing in the world.
